friday feast: only a daughter, only a dad

My great-niece, Marin, photographed by her dad, Ian

Oh, the power we daughters hold over our fathers!

We don't mean to.

But you insisted on wrapping yourselves around our little fingers.

Then you let us stand on your feet so we could dance, and proudly carried us around on your shoulders for all to see.

Is it any wonder we worship you?

Every day our lives hang in the balance, and you bear us up, without a second thought, making our burdens as light as air.

ONLY CHILD
by D. Nurkse

I cradled my newborn daughter
and felt the heartbeat
pull me out of shock.
She didn't know
what her hands were:
she folded them. I asked her
was there a place
where there was no world.
She didn't know
what a voice was: her lips
were the shape of a nipple.

(
Rest here.)

ONLY A DAD
by Edgar Albert Guest

Only a dad with a tired face,
Coming home from the daily race,
Bringing little of gold or fame
To show how well he has played the game;
But glad in his heart that his own rejoice
To see him come and to hear his voice.

Only a dad with a brood of four,
One of ten million men or more
Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and the scorns of life,
With never a whimper of pain or hate,
For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,
Merely one of the surging crowd,
Toiling, striving from day to day,
Facing whatever may come his way,
Silent whenever the harsh condemn,
And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad but he gives his all,
To smooth the way for his children small,
Doing with courage stern and grim
The deed that his father did for him.
This is the line that for him I pen:
Only a dad, but the best of men.

(from A Heap O' Livin', 1916)

Thanks, Dad, and Happy Father's Day to all the guys out there who are "only dads."

Cloudscome is hosting today's Poetry Friday Roundup at A Wrung Sponge.

**Here's a nice list of father daughter stories from Mitali's Fire Escape.

Re: As a "lover" of faces and old photos....

It's one of my favorite photos of Marin. She's quite a little beauty.

I think the one of me and my dad was taken at Haleiwa Beach Park.
Aw, lookit!
U R adordable.

What a lovely tribute to fathers everywhere.
Thank you for this!
Thanks, DeAnn. I loved my red dress and matching sandals :)!

What beautiful photos, what a BEAUTIFUL name (Marin!), and my heavens, that Nurkse poem, in particular, is beautiful.

Re: Thank you dear daughter

Happy Father's Day, James! Like your little poem :). We'll be thinking of you on Sunday.
I love the pic of you and your dad! Unfortunately, I did not get to grow up with a father. I am quite envious of the father/daughter bond - but also it makes me feel good to see and/or hear about it!

Sorry to hear you didn't grow up with a dad, Julia. My dad is 93, and my most faithful blog reader.
I love that! =^)

Mahalo to Jama and her Dad

Oh, you have your Dad at 93! What a blessed gift, encouragement to me after I put my 82 year old Dad on plane this morning with a mix of sadness at his aging and joy that he's still here and compos mentis. We shared one last laugh just before we said goodbye (teasing Mom; she laughed, too), and then the tears came as I drove home.

Re: Mahalo to Jama and her Dad

Every day I count my blessings to have both parents still alive and well. At 93, my dad is a constant inspiration to the whole family -- and an internet junkie :). Hugs to you and your dad!
"My dad is 93, and my most faithful blog reader."

Well, that alone makes me smile. :-)

The pictures, though -- oh, love that one of you with your dad. And your great-niece is beautiful!

I love watching the daddy-daughter bond develop between my husband and our girls. From the moment he held and danced with our first, I fell in love with him all over again. It is an amazing thing to witness.
Sigh. Let's hear it for fathers everywhere dancing with their daughters!

I'm typing through blurry eyes, thanks to everything about this post... including the fact that a small voice behind me is commanding "Look!" as I type.

Hugs to that little voice :)!
Got to add my voice to the clamor here: "Only Child" is an achingly lovely poem that manages to be profound, but not sentimental. And what a perfect picture. Cutie pie!!

Now you made me want to dig out pictures of my dad, and pictures of my husband when he first became a dad. But I'll get teary! I know I will...
Glad you liked "Only Child." I loved hearing a father's perspective, and thinking about that delicate balance or dance that goes on throughout a child's development. Who is the stronger? Who has the power? When he relinquishes to a child, a father grows stronger.
I lost my dad just on the brink of being able to develop an adult friendship with him. I will always feel just a bit cheated, but glad I've been able to get there with mom.
Sorry to hear that, Mary Lee. I imagine your relationship with your mom is doubly precious as a result.
I love, love, love that picture of you and your Dad. He's so handsome! They all smoked back then, didn't they? (My mom did. I can't believe how many pictures there are of her with a cigarette in her hand.)

My 80 something parents just bought a new plot of land and are preparing to build a new house. My father built the one I grew up in, and the one they still live in, in the early 50s. I just can't believe their leaving it, but I'm so proud they're taking on this new challenge.

Thanks so much for highlighting Dads today.
Your parents are amazing to tackle such a project in their 80's. Wow! We struggled to build our house 9 years ago, and I don't think I want to repeat that experience ever again.

Yes, those were the days of cigarettes, before the Surgeon General stepped in. I'm sure you made my dad's day by calling him handsome :)!
Beautiful photos and lovely poems. Happy Father's Day!
Thanks, cloudscome! Have a great weekend!
Love that photo. And I especially loved that first poem/sequence. So great.
Have a great Father's Day weekend, Kelly!
